Lung cancer is a malignancy that grows inside the lung’s parenchyma. The parenchyma is a spongy organ within the ribcage. Importantly, there are many different cell types of lung cancer, but generally it is a discrete tumor inside this parenchyma, the tissue of the lung. Often, you will hear this tumor referred to as a golf ball like tumor or a nodule.

Mesothelioma is very different. This specific cancer has just two cell types, epithelial mesothelioma and sarcomatoid mesothelioma. Additionally, you could have a combination of the two, called biphasic mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the lining outside the lung. This area is known as the pleura. There are a parietal pleura and visceral pleura, and both interact with the outside of the lung and inside of the rib cage. Between the two, there is a liquid so that as the diaphragm involuntarily contracts, it pushes this spongy lung tissue up, and it allows us to take a breath.

When someone has a malignant mesothelioma tumor of these pleural surfaces, breathing can be very painful, and it causes a mesothelioma victim to experience shortness of breath. This type of tumor is a defused tumor that grows in a defused pattern along the pleural surface, and it tends to encase the lung area. Watch the video to learn more.
